Common questions about the citizenship test
- How many questions are on the U.S. citizenship civics test?
- It depends on when you filed Form N-400. On the 2025 test, the officer asks up to 20 questions from a list of 128. On the 2008 test, the officer asks up to 10 questions from a list of 100.
- How many civics questions do I need to get right to pass?
- 12 correct answers on the 2025 test, or 6 correct answers on the 2008 test. The officer stops asking as soon as you reach that number.
- Do I take the 2025 civics test or the 2008 civics test?
- If you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 test. If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 test.
- Is the citizenship test multiple choice?
- No. The civics test is spoken: the officer asks each question out loud and you answer out loud. The multiple-choice mode on this site is only for practice.
- What is on the English test?
- Three parts. Speaking: the officer checks your spoken English during the interview. Reading: you read one of three sentences out loud correctly. Writing: you write one of three sentences correctly.
- What is the 65/20 rule?
- If you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, you study only 20 marked questions. The officer asks 10 of them and you pass with 6 correct. You may also take the civics test in your own language.
- What happens if I fail the citizenship test?
- You get a second chance. USCIS schedules another appointment, 60 to 90 days after your first interview, to retake only the part you did not pass.
- Is this website free? Is it an official government site?
- It is free, with no ads and no sign-up. It is an independent volunteer project, not a government website. The official source is uscis.gov/citizenship.
This is a free study aid made by a volunteer. It is not a government website and not legal advice, and it may contain mistakes or be out of date. Always confirm what you study with the official USCIS materials. See the terms of use.
