Which civics test do I take?
It depends on the date USCIS received your Form N-400.
| You filed Form N-400 | Your test | Questions asked | To pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| On or after October 20, 2025 | 2025 test (128 questions to study) | Up to 20 | 12 correct |
| Before October 20, 2025 | 2008 test (100 questions to study) | Up to 10 | 6 correct |
Not sure of your filing date? Look for the “Received Date” on your Form I-797C receipt notice, or check your USCIS online account.
How the two tests differ
- 2025 test: the officer asks up to 20 questions and stops when you have answered 12 correctly or 9 incorrectly.
- 2008 test: the officer asks up to 10 questions and stops when you have answered 6 correctly.
- Both tests are spoken. There are no multiple-choice options at the interview.
- The English reading, writing and speaking tests are the same for everyone.
If you are 65 or older
If you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, you study only 20 marked questions on either test. The officer asks 10 of them and you pass with 6 correct. See exemptions and accommodations.
